When we write about ourselves, we lay the pieces of our human heart onto the page.  Our secrets, our heartaches, our shame, and our triumphs become a language of their own. A soul-speak.

When I decided to tell the story of Andrew and Frightful, I knew this story was bigger than myself. Just today I received this letter from a mother with a story of her own.

Hello,

My name is Nicole. I live in Olympia, WA and just devoured your book in two days while on our family trip to Friday Harbor. The instant I saw the cover photo of your book at Barnes & Noble, I knew it was going to be amazing.

Thank you for sharing your harrowing experience. My son is also on the autism spectrum and has bonded with our chickens in a way that he has not done with anyone else. People always thought it odd that he was so attached to these hens, but [I know] they just “get” each other, and it brings me so much joy.

It was heartwarming to see another family saved by a chicken, and when I read about Andrew’s graduation speech about chickens having autism, I started bawling. You have a very special family and I’m so honored to have met you though your words. I wish you and Andrew continued health and blessings.

**Cover photo: Nicole’s son, Elijah, with his favorite hen, Red.

Kristin Jarvis Adams' story of Andrew and Frightful is a beautiful and remarkable journey through medical mysteries, a reliance on a superhero chicken, and ultimately, a transcendent faith that ushers in hope when all else seems lost.
